Burghley house was built and mostly designed by William Cecil, Lord High Treasurer to Queen Elizabeth I, between 1555 and 1587, the main part of the House has 35 major rooms on the ground and first floors. There are more than 80 lesser rooms and numerous halls, corridors, bathrooms and service areas. The lead roof extends to three quarters of an acre, restoration and rebuilding of which began in 1983 and took nearly ten years to complete.
Following the building of Burghley, the descendants of the Lord High Treasurer have all contributed to the collections that fill this magnificent house. Visitors today are able to see one of the finest assemblies of 17th century Italian masterpieces, an exceptional collection of Oriental and European ceramics, fine furniture, textiles and works of art grouped together in a magnificent setting that remains a family home. For the visitor Burghley house has facilities that include the Orangery restaurant, a well stocked gift shop, along with some of the best gardens that are full of of surprises. The park offers the most beautiful walks around the historic parkland that was designed and laid out by Capability Brown. The parkland is home to a herd of fallow deer that makes the visit to Burghley house stand still in time.The house can be said to be is one of the principal examples of 16th century English Elizabethan architecture and has a suite of rooms that are in the baroque style, with carvings by Grinling Gibbons. Burghley house is home to the Burghley horse trials, the trials are an annual three day trial.
The Land Rover Freelander Burghley Horse Trial is classified by the FEI as one of the leading three day events in the world. The trials are run in conjunction with the event since 1990 is the Burghley young event horse final, which judges four and five year old horses on their potential as future Olympic mounts.
