What is heating oil? Heating oil is referred to as Kerosene, boiler juice and 28 secound heating fuel. Heating oil is very similar to diesel fuel and both are classified as distillates. Heating oil condenses at a lower temperature than the heavy (C20+) hydrocarbons. Heating oil is usually transported by road to individual homes and pumped into oil storage tanks.
Domestic heating oil what are the costs? Ever wondered why heating oil is costly? Well so is gas and electricity, but in the Vale of Belvoir a lot of houses and businesses are dependent on heating oil to keep them warm and to keep their businesses running. The price you pay is not just the cost of the refined oil. Your distributor also has to pay for its delivery to your home, along with the cost of drivers, office staff and other operating overheads and they do have to make a profit and then the tax has to taken care of. The time of year you buy your oil, as well as the weather conditions, will impact on the price. In the summer, refiners, wholesalers and distributors will have enough oil in storage to cope with the predictably low demand so prices will remain lower, assuming no dramatic change in the price of crude oil.
Higher prices in the winter months. No doubt as winter arrives, aand after that first rapid drop in temperature or the forecasts of severe weather are out then this will lead to an increase in demand for heating oil. Distributors will start to run low on stocks of fuel and will place new orders from refineries, who also will have to keep up with the increased demand for the heating oil supply, just like all markets this will result in an increase in prices all along the line as demand exceeds supply. So top up your oil tank now and keep out the cold this winter. Where you live will also have an impact on the price that you will pay as delivery costs add to the price. If you live in a remote, rural area for example, not only will transport costs be higher but there will be fewer suppliers, meaning less competition and usually higher prices of heating oil will prevail.
Tanks and storage of heating oil. If you have an old tank it is a good idea to have it tested as it may be leaking and you do not want that to happen. Old tanks are made of metals that eventually rust, new tanks tend to be strong and plastic and with good locks on. If you have a tank without a lock it would be advisable to get it locked as we have had a number of oil tanks that have been drained by thieves opperating in the area. A 1,200 liter tank full of heating oil can be worth over £500, so best protect it!
How can you save on heating oil costs? The larger your tank, the better chance you have of planning when you buy your oil. Stock up in the summer months and then top up when prices dip. Don't wait until you are about to run out just before Christmas when you can guarantee paying a higher price because suppliers will be running low on stock as well as time to deliver.
Boiler and Aga servicing. Having your boiler serviced and maintained every year will help save some fuel costs, also if you heat and cook with an Aga or a Rayburn oil fired rang they needs servicing as well. Like all boilers make sure you central heating is running well, bleed the radiators and have your thermostat checked.
New Boilers. Boilers account for around 60% of what you spend in a year on energy bills, so getting an efficient new boiler installed can make a big difference to the performance of how your heating system works. If you are having a boiler installed for the first time or are replacing an existing one, the benifits of a new up to date boiler working well in your home will be soon felt. When your new boiler is being installed or serviced, your installer should also need to clean and flush your central heating system out.

Climate Change. Carbon dioxide (CO2) is one of the main greenhouse gases which causes climate change. It is estimated that around 45% of the UK's man-made CO2 emissions come from energy we use everyday, at home and when we travel. By reducing our personal CO2 emissions, we can all play an important part in helping to prevent climate change and get lower heating and energy bills at the same time.
House Insulation how to save on central heating bills in your home. Because around half of heat loss in a typical home is through the walls and loft, it's worth checking whether yours are insulated and what standard insulation is installed.. Having good insulation such as cavity wall insulation and roof insulation can also help you to save on your heating oil bills.
Cavity wall insulation. Around a third of all the heat lost in an un-insulated home is lost through the walls. Cavity wall insulation is a fantastic way to significantly reduce the amount of energy you need to heat your home and could save you on your fuel bills.
Solid wall insulation. If you have solid walls you can either insulate them with external or internal insulation, not only does this make your home a lot less noisy but will help yoe to save you on your energy bills.
Floor insulation. Insulating beneath floorboards will reduce heating bills and improve the comfort of your home. You could save by insulating your floors. Gaps and cracks around floors and skirting boards are easy to fill yourself using a tube of sealant again this again helps in reducing heating bills.
Loft Insulation. Insulating your loft could save you the most on your energy bills if you don't have any insulation there at the moment simply by topping up their loft insulation to 270mm would save you real money.
Draught proofing. Using strips and excluders to draught proof around leaky door and window frames can save you on heating bills. If everyone in the UK draught proofed around doors and windows, great savings would be made and global warming would have a chance of a small reduction by your actions.
Tanks and pipe insulation. By improving both tank and pipe insulation in your home will keep your water hotter for longer by reducing the amount of heat that escapes. Fitting a hot water cylinder jacket that is at least 75mm thick will help save on your central heating bills and keep the whole familys clothes aired.
Glazing and windows. By fitting double glazing in your home leads to cuts in the heat lost through windows by half and installing Energy Saving Trust double glazing could save on your heating bills. Double glazing works by trapping air between two panes of glass creating an insulating barrier that reduces heat loss, noise and condensation. The difference between old and installing new windows not only make your house warmer it also improves the value.
Grants and incentives. There may also be grants and offers available to help you get properly insulated and this if done will help you save on central heating oil bills, for more information contact your local Energy Saving Trust advice centre on 0800 512 012.
