"The person who is destined to be a good hairdresser is definitely going to have to be a people person, you can not go into a service oriented industry like hairdressing unless you enjoy working with people and in the case of a hairdresser the skill must extend to be a good expert when it comes to one on one contact. Hairdressers need good social skills and the ability to make small talk and keep a conversation flowing when it is appropriate and to be able to understand that the client have trusted the styalist to style their and may also trust the stylist with their other secrets of what is happening in their life! Someone who makes their living from hairdressing by way of serving the needs of others cannot afford to have a bad mood day.
Hairdressers may not always feel totally happy, but a good hairdresser can not put that feeling accross to the clients. A top class hairdresser also needs an eye for aesthetics, and be able to recognize what others might find appealing. This doesn’t necessarily have to be an innate ability, as you can learn the basic rules of design and can follow trends in magazines and learn to recreate popular looks".
"Good hairdresser with a flair for style also need to be organized and having the details in place to keep track of in dealing with a growing client base good hairdressers need to keep records of the services performed for various clients and the products used and especially since some products are not compatible and would result in unfortunate reactions if inappropriately applied to the wrong client. Good hairdressers keep a record of the haircolor used on a particular client and use an incompatible shade the next time. The top hairdressers always keep track of scheduling of all of their clients, the devil is in the detail, reminders for follow up services and appointments and times working inventory of products and supplies so that the salon can always provide the services a client may desire, are the tools of a good hairdressing salon".
"Finally, a good hairdresser has to be very self motivated, being courteous with all of clients at all times and never hesitate to suggest follow-up appointments for maintenance services, or to suggest additional services that you feel would benefit his or hers client".

The Difficulties of Being A Hairdresser.
"Contrary to what some people believe, the job of a hairdresser can be very physically demanding. It may not require heavy lifting work, but it does require that the individual is able to stand on his or her feet for long periods of time and often to assume and hold uncomfortable positions for a period of time. And there is a lot of repetitive motion when cutting and styling someones hair".
"Also working with some strong chemical compounds there is a need to be carefull as some of the chemicles used do not all have a pleasant fragrance. An element of care needs to take place in order to avoid things like dermatitis that can develop from having to constantly wash yor hands after applying shampoo and colors".
"Sometimes clients comes to you having great expectations of the style they want their hair to be done but many is the case that they have no realistic concept of whether it is possible, or even how to relay their wishes to the haidresser. So this can be a little stressfull having to explain what is and is not going to work, in order not to disapoint the client or appear to be to heavy handed".
Good luck if you are starting out in the business... Matthew
