Remigius, a Benedictine monk and a supporter of William the Conqueror at the Battle of Hastings in 1066, was the first Norman Bishop of the largest diocese in medieval England, extending from the Humber down to the Thames.
Lincoln Castle.
A castle still remains having been established in Lincoln by William, located in the south-west corner of the old Roman upper city. The new cathedral was built of Lincolnshire oolitic limestone opposite the castle in the south-east corner, the Catherdral is the third largest in Britain and cost over £1 million to maintain per year! The Cathedral has suffered over the years from damage by fire and an earthquakes in its history but remains a major building on the hill above Lincoln. The cathedral's large bell, that is known as great Tom of Lincoln, is a quarter-hour striking clock. The clock was installed in the early 19th century.

The history of Lincoln Cathedral.
Lincoln Cathedral is at present a very popular destination and is visited by over 250,000 tourists a year.It has a wartime history as Lincolnshire was home to many RAF Bomber Command airfields during the Second World War, giving rise to a nickname of being the 'Bomber County'. Lincoln Cathedral was an easily recognisable landmark for crews returning from raids over Germany and became of importance to the many airmen both as a destination of landmark for navigation and the fact for prayer of a safe return home. Appropriately, it currently has the only memorial in the United Kingdom dedicated to Bomber Command in the Second World War. The Cathedral was used for the filming of The Da Vinci Code a book by Dan Brown. Filming took place mainly within the cloisters and chapter house of the cathedral. The history of the Cathedral is vast but who ever visits finds something new that they had no understanding off about the history of worship and how this building was built over a vast period of time.
The Lincoln Imps.
The legend has it that two mischievous creatures called imps they were sent by the demon himself Satan to do evil work on the earth. And after causing trouble in the Northern England, the two imps headed south to Lincoln Cathedral where they smashed tables and chairs and tripped up the Bishop. When an angel came out of a book of hymns and told them to stop, one of the imps was brave and started throwing rocks at the angel but the other imp cowered under the broken tables and chairs. The angel turned the first imp to stone!providing the second imp with a chance to escape and he did by all accounts to Grimsby! However the angel followed behind him to Grimsby and turned him into stone as well!
