Newton are hoping to drill two wells of a 1,000 metres deep to collect data 24 hours a day for up to 120 days initially, before deciding whether to drill for oil that may be found. Hard to believe is it ? Then read on. Newton believe that the life-span of the oil reserve is up to 30 years. If you can remember back to the fifties we had "nodding donkeys" in the Vale of Belvoir at Granby and on Belvoir Road on the way to the Castle.

As with all things in the Vale of Belvoir there will always be objections. The no coal to be mined in the Vale of Belvoir and challenged by the last Duke of Rutland led to just that no mines, no additional jobs, and no real investment in the area. Yes we do not want the countryside wrecked but things that can help many people in this day and age of reccesion need to be considered very carefully. Not everyone is liking the idea of Sedgebrook becoming the new Dallas of Lincolnshire.

Mike Bowyer, Sedgebrook Parish Council vice chairman, is horrified by the idea of an oil rig on the village’s doorstep. Noise, traffic and environmental impact are among the concerns raised. Mr Bowyer said: “It’s a definite, categorical no this is a peaceful village and it’s not on. The site is surrounded by flat fields and noise travels.”Newton Energy’s application warns of up to 30 HGV lorries and other vehicles going to and from the site daily, which Mr Bowyer believes will have a massive impact on the A52.
We ask that could also provide jobs and investment in to the area of the Vale of Belvoir. He also wants wider green issues taken into consideration. He said: “Years of pumping oil out is ludicrous when we are trying, as a nation, to use green energy. The site is not a quarter of a mile from where a plan for a wind farm was turned down.” A meeting to discuss the plans and decide on a course of action will be held by parish council members.
Aware noise levels could affect people living locally, Newton Energy’s leading consultant Michael Frey said the firm will do what it can to form a good relationship with villagers. He said: “The last thing in the world we want is to have anybody make the incorrect assumption that we’re a big oil company throwing our weight around with no consideration. In particular because BP hasn’t done our industry any favours in the last few months
From the local press a geologist opinion.
Having worked for 36 years as a geologist in the oil industry can I make a few comments about the oil at Sedgebrook story.
- The four million barrels is just an estimate and nobody will know if there is any oil there until an Exploration well has been drilled. On a world wide average only one in 10 Exploration wells finds commercial oil.
- Modern land rigs have acoustic barriers around the main engines, mud pumps and drill floor so any noise will be at a minimal level.
- If the well is successful there would be only a “Christmas tree” of valves about two metres high or a small pump on the surface and the oil would most likely be collected by tanker once or twice a week.
- The number of 30 HGs sounds high to me for normal operations and I suspect this would only be at the start up of drilling. This level would not even be noticed with the current traffic levels on the A52.
- Mr Bowyers from the Parish Councils comments that “we are trying as a nation to use green energy”
He cannot have it both ways. The next time he fills his car up he should ponder that somebody, somewhere had to drill a well to find the fuel for him to use.I would like to say that I have never heard of test before the article and have no connection to them. CHRIS SHANNON Village Street, Braceby

I would be happy to meet with local people and the council to discuss concerns. The prospective site for drilling is well away from the village, located between a railway line and an A road. Traffic while drilling will not affect the village. Newton Energy is a Canadian public company, small but capable, bringing new economic activity to Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire. My mobile is 0783 515 8202. I welcome any opportunity to provide information to local residents.
