The history of Valentine's Day cards in the UK.

Valentines day began here in the United Kingdom to be celebrated some where around the seventeenth century. By the middle of the eighteenth century, it was common for friends and lovers to exchange small tokens of affection or handwritten notes so the love affair for Valentine’s Day had been born and has continued for some time.

St.Valentine legend has it that Valentine was a priest who served during third century in Rome.

The Emperor at that time was Claudius II. Emperor who decided that single men made better soldiers than those that were married! We are not sure how he came to this conclusion. However he outlawed marriage for young men to maintain a stronger army. St Valentine felt this was an unfair thing to do and chose to marry young couples in secret. This was not a smart move at all and when the Emperor Claudius II found out about Valentine's actions he had him put to death!

By the end of the century cards were growing very popular.

Valentine printed cards began to replace written letters being sent out due to improvements in the printing presses at that time. Ready-made cards were an easy way for people to express their emotions in a time when direct expression of one's feelings was something a little new.

Today every February 14th we celebrate Valentine's Day.

Sending out a lavish or simple card to that special person. Many people also like to surprise even further by sending out gifts like chocolates or flowers to loved ones, however Valentines Day cards are the real message of the love and affection on St Valentines day and they can be a very secret way to show those we love and care for them all year round as well as to surprise and remain secret to that special person with a guess who? Be my Valentine message! Cheaper postage rates also contributed to an increase in the popularity of sending Valentine's Day greetings out in Victorian times. One of the oldest known Valentine’s cards is on display at the British Museum.
