Rutland Water is an internationally famous nature reserve managed by Anglia Water and the Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust. The nature Reserve occupies a narrow strip of land around the Western end of Rutland Water and covers about 600 acres. The reserve was created in the 1970's with the construction of the main reservoir. The water is a natural habitat for all sorts of wildfowl and regularly holds in excess of 20,000 waterfowl and is a breeding site for many species, the site its self is of special scientific interest and is a designated as a European Special Protection Area and is an important wetland RAMSAR site.

The heritage of Rutland Water.

The book about Rutland Water has been compiled and edited by Robert Ovens and Sheila Sleath the book contains 680 pages, with full colour this is one of the most extensive and important books on Rutland ever produced. Its publication marked the culmination of a three-year community project initiated by the Society and sponsored by the Heritage Lottery Fund’s Local Heritage Initiative. Focusing on Rutland Water. The book can be found in most local booksellers and details are available online.

Everyone who has seen it has commended the Society and the editors on its quality and content. Copies will be available in bookshops in Oakham, Uppingham and Stamford, the Rutland Water Tourist Information Centre, and the Egleton Nature Reserve, as well as the Rutland County Museum. Rutland Water Sailing Club.

The Rutland Water has a sailing club The thirteen acre site on the South shore of Rutland Water has seven concrete slipways with four pontoons and connecting walkways,making for easy launch and recovery of keelboats and cruisers. There are 145 moorings for cruisers and parking space for 850 dinghies and sailboards.Being one of the largest man-made stretches of water in Europe, Rutland Water is as large as Windermere and set in the Rutland countryside. The beauty of Rutland can be seen at its best from a boat. Conditions are similar to estuary sailing, but without the tides - over 3000 acres (1215 hectares) of sheltered water.

Close by is the internationally famous nature reserve that is managed in partnership with Anglian Water and the Leicestershire & Rutland Wildlife Trust. This provides one of the most important wildfowl sanctuaries in Great Britain, regularly holding in excess of 20,000 waterfowl.
